Imam Freed After 72 Days in ICE Detention
A wave of relief washed over the Clifton Mosque in Cincinnati on a recent autumn afternoon. Ayman Soliman, a 51-year-old Egyptian imam and hospital chaplain, was released from Butler County Jail after more than 10 weeks of detention. His ordeal, which began with a routine immigration check-in on July 9th, highlights the controversial deportation policies of the Trump administration and raises concerns about due process.
A Routine Check-in Turns into Detention
Soliman, who fled Egypt in 2014 after facing imprisonment for his journalistic work, had been living in the US. His July check-in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) took an unexpected turn. Following an extensive interview, an ICE agent and an FBI representative informed him of his detention. “They said they were sorry, but they would have to detain me,” Soliman recounted. “The ICE officer explained that a new order had been issued just 24 hours prior mandating the detention of all individuals appearing at ICE offices. He stressed that it wasn’t his decision.”
Harsh Conditions and Isolation
His subsequent experience at the Butler County Jail was harrowing. After being held for 12 hours in a freezing waiting room, clad only in a t-shirt and pants, Soliman described the conditions as “traumatizing and dehumanizing.” He recalled rusted beds and a shared toilet facility. The situation worsened when he was placed in solitary confinement for five days. This followed a dispute over his request for a quiet space to pray, which was denied. A correctional officer subsequently accused Soliman of failing to comply with a lockdown order, leading to his isolation.
Allegations and Legal Battle
US authorities had accused Soliman of various alleged terror-related offenses in Egypt, accusations he vehemently denies. His case underscores the challenges faced by individuals seeking asylum or facing deportation, particularly those from regions experiencing political instability. The release marks a significant setback for the Trump administration’s deportation efforts, which have been criticized for their aggressive tactics and lack of due process in numerous instances. Hundreds of thousands have been deported under these policies.
A Return to Community and Faith
Soliman’s release is expected to be followed by the full restoration of his visa status. At the Clifton Mosque, the community celebrated his return, expressing gratitude for his release and highlighting the importance of due process in immigration proceedings. Soliman himself expressed relief and described his experience as a rebirth. His case serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of aggressive immigration enforcement policies and the need for fair and humane treatment of asylum seekers and immigrants.
Looking Ahead
While Soliman’s immediate future is brighter, his case raises broader questions about the treatment of immigrants within the US justice system. Advocacy groups continue to call for reforms to ensure due process and humane treatment for all individuals facing deportation. The ongoing legal complexities surrounding his case will likely remain a focal point for discussion and debate.
