Trump Eyes Federal Agency Purge Amid Shutdown
As the United States government shutdown extended into its second day, former President Donald Trump on Thursday characterized the funding lapse as an “unprecedented opportunity.” He indicated plans to advance his agenda of reducing federal worker numbers and streamlining government departments.
Trump announced via social media that he would convene a meeting with Russell Vought, who formerly led the White House Office of Management and Budget and is recognized as a principal architect behind proposals for significant federal workforce reductions and buyouts. Vought is also known for his involvement with “Project 2025,” an initiative focused on preparing a conservative transition into government.
Trump’s ‘Unprecedented Opportunity’
On Truth Social, Trump detailed his intentions: “I have a meeting today with Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent.” He added, “I can’t believe the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity.” This statement underscores his view of the shutdown as a strategic opening to implement long-desired reforms.
The government ceased operations at midnight on Wednesday after congressional Democrats declined to endorse a Republican funding proposal. Their refusal stemmed from the bill’s omission of several healthcare-focused concessions they had sought, leading to the current impasse.
Vought Targets Federal Funding and Projects
Vought has been vocal about leveraging the shutdown to facilitate further layoffs within the federal workforce. On Wednesday, he confirmed the cancellation of billions of dollars in federal funding earmarked for projects with ties to Democratic initiatives. Specifically, approximately $18 billion was frozen for critical infrastructure projects in and around New York City. Vought justified these actions by citing “unconstitutional DEI principles,” referencing the diversity, equity, and inclusion policies that Trump has consistently sought to eliminate from federal government operations.
Among the high-profile projects affected by these funding freezes are Manhattan’s Second Avenue subway line extension and the ambitious Hudson River tunnel project, which aims to enhance connectivity between New York City and New Jersey. These cancellations represent a direct challenge to the Democratic leadership and their constituents.
Democratic Leaders Condemn Actions
The abrupt withdrawal of funds triggered an immediate and strong rebuke from Senator Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the Senate, and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority Leader. Both leaders represent New York and issued a joint statement expressing their outrage.
“Donald Trump is once again treating working people as collateral damage in his endless campaign of chaos and revenge,” their statement read, highlighting their perception of the former president’s motives. Beyond the New York projects, Vought also announced the suspension of roughly $8 billion in funds allocated for 16 states, further escalating the financial impact of the shutdown on various regions.
The unfolding events underscore a deepening political divide, with the government shutdown becoming a battleground for policy and ideological warfare, particularly concerning federal spending and the scope of government.
