US Revokes Six Visas Over Kirk Assassination Comments
The U.S. State Department, operating under the Trump administration, announced Tuesday the revocation of visas for six foreign nationals. This action was taken in response to social media comments made by these individuals, which reportedly celebrated the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
“The United States has no obligation to host foreigners who wish death on Americans,” the State Department declared in a statement published on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. The department further emphasized its ongoing efforts to “identify visa holders who celebrated the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk.”
Identifying Unwelcome Individuals
In a subsequent thread on X, owned by Trump donor and self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist” Elon Musk, the State Department presented six “examples of aliens who are no longer welcome in the US.” These examples included screenshots and direct quotes from individuals identified as foreign nationals hailing from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Paraguay, and South Africa. While the department refrained from naming the individuals, the provided screenshots enabled the identification of at least two people. One of these individuals had previously faced significant online harassment from conservative users on X.
One of the highlighted comments posted on X read, “Charlie Kirk won’t be remembered as a hero. He was used to astroturf a movement of white nationalist trailer trash!” This example underscored the type of commentary that prompted the visa revocations.
Upholding Immigration Laws
Concluding its thread, the State Department issued a stern statement, asserting that President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio “will defend our borders, our culture, and our citizens by enforcing our immigration laws. Aliens who take advantage of America’s hospitality while celebrating the assassination of our citizens will be removed.” This move signals a resolute stance on the part of the administration regarding the conduct of foreign visitors.
This latest action follows a previous directive from the administration. Last month, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau had actively encouraged social media users to submit posts critical of Kirk. Landau expressed his “disgust to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action.” His call to action indicated an early intent to scrutinize and address such online expressions.
Broader Immigration Enforcement
The revocation of these visas aligns with a broader pattern of intensified immigration enforcement under the current administration. Previously, the government has escalated efforts to identify and potentially deport thousands of foreign students accused of participating in various forms of unrest. The State Department’s recent decision reinforces its commitment to using immigration laws to address what it deems as objectionable behavior by foreign nationals on U.S. soil or online platforms. The focus remains on safeguarding national interests and ensuring that those granted entry to the U.S. adhere to expected standards of conduct, particularly concerning expressions related to American citizens and events.
