Former Bush Adviser Charged with Secret Document Hoard

A distinguished Indian-American scholar, who previously advised the US government, faces charges following his arrest for the alleged unlawful retention of national security information. This includes thousands of pages of top-secret documents reportedly discovered at his Virginia residence. Ashley Tellis, 64, a prominent figure known for his tenure on the National Security Council under former US President George W. Bush and instrumental in negotiating the landmark US-India nuclear deal, was taken into custody and formally charged over the past weekend.

Allegations Unfold

According to court filings, agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a search warrant at Tellis’s home, unearthing a cache of classified and top-secret records. Given his prior roles with the State Department and the Pentagon, Tellis possessed a top-secret security clearance, granting him access to highly sensitive government materials.

The accusations detail that Tellis allegedly gained entry to facilities belonging to both the US State Department and the Department of Defense. There, he is said to have either personally printed or instructed a colleague to print classified documents. These documents reportedly covered critical subjects, including the capabilities of US military aircraft.

Further, the FBI’s indictment levies serious allegations against Tellis concerning his interactions with foreign entities. He is accused of engaging in multiple meetings with Chinese officials over several years, during which he allegedly passed documents contained within an envelope.

Defense and Denial

Tellis has vehemently denied all charges brought against him. His legal representatives released a statement asserting his professional standing: “Ashley J Tellis is a widely respected scholar and senior policy adviser.” The statement continued, “We will be vigorously contesting the allegations brought against him, specifically any insinuation of his operating on behalf of a foreign adversary.”

Prior to these charges, Tellis had a distinguished career, serving in the US foreign service. He currently holds a position as a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a prominent Washington-based think tank. There, he earned recognition as a leading strategic expert, particularly on US-India relations.

International Repercussions

The news of Tellis’s arrest has sent shockwaves, especially in India, his country of birth. A frequent commentator on foreign policy matters in India, his detention has ignited a significant political controversy. Amit Malviya, who leads the IT cell – the digital and social media arm – of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), commented on the development, stating, “The forces working against India are beginning to unravel in ways few could have imagined.” Malviya had previously voiced objections to Tellis’s critical analyses of certain BJP policies and actions, adding another layer to the unfolding drama.

This case underscores the severe penalties associated with the mishandling of classified information and highlights the intense scrutiny placed on individuals with access to national security secrets, particularly those with high-profile government connections and international ties.
