Mamdani Decries GOP Deportation Push as ‘Islamophobia’
A federal inquiry into the naturalization process of Zohran Mamdani, the leading Democratic contender for New York City mayor, is being actively pursued by two United States House Republicans. This contentious push has drawn sharp condemnation from Democratic officials and Muslim civil rights organizations, who label the efforts as “racist and anti-Muslim.” Mamdani, currently favored to win the November 4 mayoral election, is facing scrutiny over his path to U.S. citizenship.
GOP Lawmakers Lead the Charge
The campaign to investigate Mamdani’s citizenship status is spearheaded by Florida Congressman Randy Fine and Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles. Both lawmakers are well-known for their unwavering support of former President Donald Trump’s administration. Their actions have ignited a fierce debate about the intersection of immigration, politics, and religious identity in American public life.
Representative Fine recently escalated his demands, calling for a comprehensive federal review of all naturalization processes conducted over the last three decades, explicitly singling out Mamdani as the initial focus for such an examination. In a statement to the New York Post, Fine articulated his rationale: “I just think we need to take a hard look at how these folks became citizens, and if there is any fraud or any violation of the rules we need to denaturalize and deport.” He further elaborated on his concerns, stating, “I know that there’s a lot of us that are very, very concerned about the enemy within – people who have come to this country to become citizens, to destroy it.”
Concurrently, since June, Representative Ogles has been advocating for a Justice Department investigation into Mamdani, pushing for his deportation. Ogles’ claims center on Mamdani’s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which Ogles alleges is a communist organization that Mamdani failed to disclose during his naturalization proceedings.
Mamdani Responds to Allegations
Mamdani, who holds dual citizenship in both the United States and Uganda, has forcefully criticized the rhetoric emanating from Fine, Ogles, and other Republican figures. He contextualized these attacks against the backdrop of significant national events, including the federal government shutdown that commenced on October 1, and his own decisive victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary in June.
Speaking on MSNBC’s The Weekend: Primetime on Saturday, Mamdani highlighted the perceived misplaced priorities. “In a moment where Americans across the country are deeply fearful of whether they can afford the basic dignities of life, be it healthcare, be it groceries, be it their rent, the focus of the Republican party is to try and denaturalize the Muslim guy that won the New York City Democratic primary with the most votes in our city’s history?” he questioned. His remarks underscore a belief that the Republican Party is prioritizing politically charged attacks against a prominent Muslim candidate over addressing the tangible economic anxieties faced by many Americans. He added, “It just speaks to the fact that for the Republic…” leaving the thought to resonate with viewers.
The controversy surrounding Mamdani’s citizenship reflects a broader national discussion on immigration policies and the treatment of naturalized citizens, particularly those from minority backgrounds. As the mayoral election approaches, the accusations and counter-accusations are likely to intensify, keeping Mamdani’s personal history and political affiliations firmly in the spotlight.
