The president of the nation’s largest federal employee union has issued a forceful plea to immediately end the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, which now ranks as the second-longest in the country’s history. This urgent call comes as hundreds of thousands of dedicated public servants face the reality of a second missed salary payment, intensifying financial strain across the federal workforce.

A Direct Appeal for Political Resolution

Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), a union representing over 800,000 federal workers, articulated his organization’s position in a letter dispatched Monday morning. While carefully avoiding direct blame on either political party, Kelley unequivocally stated that legislators must cease “playing politics” and swiftly approve a temporary funding measure to reopen government operations. The closure has now surpassed the four-week mark, leading to widespread disruption and hardship.

“Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight,” Kelley asserted in his statement. “Today I’m making mine: it’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today.
