Accused October 7 Attacker Hid in US, Lived in Louisiana
A man alleged to have played a role in the devastating October 7, 2023, Hamas-led assault on Israel has been apprehended in the United States, where he was reportedly living in Louisiana after fraudulently obtaining a visa. Federal authorities accuse Mahmoud Amin Ya’qub al-Muhtadi of participating in the cross-border attack, then concealing his past to gain legal residency in the U.S.
According to a recently unsealed criminal complaint filed by the FBI, al-Muhtadi is alleged to have armed himself and assembled a group to breach the Gaza Strip’s boundary into southern Israel during the October 7 onslaught. That day, nearly 1,200 individuals were killed, and over 250 people, including dozens of American citizens, were abducted by Hamas militants. While a tenuous ceasefire led to the release of 20 remaining living hostages on October 13, the scale of the violence shocked the world.
Allegations of October 7 Involvement
The FBI’s complaint details al-Muhtadi’s alleged affiliation with the Gaza-based military wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), identifying him as an operative. This information was compiled in a complaint prepared by FBI supervisory special agent Alexandria M Thoman O’Donnell and submitted to a federal judge on October 6. O’Donnell is a key member of a specialized task force dedicated to investigating the murders and kidnappings of American citizens that occurred during the October 7 attacks.
Deception and US Entry
The federal charges against al-Muhtadi extend beyond his alleged involvement in the conflict. He is also accused of visa fraud, specifically denying any past engagement in terrorist activities on his application to enter the United States. Despite this alleged deception, he successfully became a legal permanent resident in 2024, raising serious questions about the vetting process for foreign nationals.
His presence in the U.S. was ultimately detected by the Joint Task Force October 7, an initiative launched in March of this year to track down individuals linked to the attacks. The task force, in collaboration with the FBI’s New Orleans field office, spearheaded the investigation that led to al-Muhtadi’s apprehension. The Justice Department acknowledged the crucial assistance provided by seven Israeli security organizations, including Lahav 433, Israel’s national crime-fighting umbrella organization, in locating and detaining him.
Strong Condemnation from Officials
The arrest has drawn strong condemnation from U.S. officials. Pam Bondi, co-chair of the Joint Task Force October 7 and former Florida Attorney General, issued a powerful statement regarding the charges. “After hiding out in the United States, this monster has been found and charged with participating in the atrocities of October 7 – the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust,” Bondi declared, emphasizing the gravity of the alleged crimes.
Al-Muhtadi was expected to make his initial court appearance on Friday, marking the beginning of a complex legal process. The case underscores the global reach of investigations into the October 7 attacks and the commitment of U.S. and international agencies to bring alleged perpetrators to justice, even those who attempt to evade accountability by seeking refuge abroad.
