Federal authorities have launched an investigation following a shooting incident involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Southern California on Thursday. This marks the second such event in the region within a week, raising concerns about the agency’s use of force amidst an aggressive expansion of deportation operations.

Ontario Incident Prompts Federal Scrutiny

According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ICE officers were conducting a routine vehicle stop in Ontario when an unrelated driver approached the scene. Officers reportedly instructed this individual, who was not the target of their operation, to vacate the area. Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary, detailed the escalation in a statement: “As the driver began to pull away, the car stopped and attempted to run officers over by reversing directly at them without stopping.”

In response to the perceived threat, an ICE officer discharged their weapon. McLaughlin confirmed, “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, fired defensive shots at the vehicle. The subject fled the scene and abandoned his vehicle.” The incident is now under federal review.

Pattern of Force: Recent Shootings

This latest event follows closely on the heels of another shooting last week in Los Angeles, where federal agents shot Carlitos Ricardo Parias. Parias, a prominent TikTok creator known for livestreaming U.S. immigration enforcement operations, reportedly attempted to ram federal vehicles after agents had surrounded and boxed in his car. Officers shot him in the elbow, while a ricochet bullet struck a deputy U.S. marshal in the hand.

Beyond California, another shooting involving an ICE officer occurred Wednesday in Phoenix. Officials were attempting to stop a vehicle when the driver began to accelerate away. ABC 15 reported that an officer, positioned in the vehicle’s path, fired at the car as it departed.

Broader Context: Expanded Operations and Facility Concerns

These incidents unfold as the Trump administration intensifies its efforts to significantly expand deportation operations nationwide. Reports suggest the government is actively working to overhaul ICE leadership, aiming to accelerate the pace of removals across the country.

Concurrently, conditions within ICE detention facilities continue to draw heavy criticism. The Guardian recently reported that U.S. immigration officials are increasingly detaining individuals in small, secretive facilities for extended periods—sometimes days or even weeks—a practice that directly violates federal policy. The humanitarian concerns are stark: at least 16 people died in ICE facilities between January and September of this year alone.
