NYC Victory Fuels LA Activism: Bringing Campaign Hope West
While the electoral triumph of mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has generated significant enthusiasm across New York City, its reverberations have extended far beyond the five boroughs. Young progressive activists nationwide, particularly a dedicated cohort from Los Angeles, have found renewed purpose in Mamdani’s win. Many of these individuals journeyed to the East Coast to lend their support to his campaign and are now determined to transplant those invaluable experiences and renewed optimism back to Southern California.
A Spark Ignites Westward
Among those inspired by Mamdani’s grassroots campaign was Neda Davarpanah, an accomplished screenwriter and actor based in Los Angeles. Davarpanah felt such a strong connection to the movement that she traveled to New York in late October, dedicating her time to canvassing on the Upper East Side. Her activism wasn’t new; in 2023, as a newly inducted member of the Writers Guild of America, she had actively participated in the Hollywood picket lines.
However, Davarpanah observed a gradual decline in the fervent energy that once characterized the strike frontlines over the past year. That vitality was dramatically rekindled by Mamdani’s emergence on the political scene. “We felt so motivated and energized to help people in a city we don’t even live in because of the broader impact on the country,” she articulated, underscoring the national implications of the New York race.
DSA-LA’s National Vision
Davarpanah is not alone in her convictions. Many of the young organizers interviewed belong to the Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a robust group comprising 4,000 members. Mamdani’s campaign resonated deeply within this chapter, not merely for its local impact but for its broader significance as a model for progressive politics across the United States. Looking ahead, these dedicated members are committed to translating the hope and crucial lessons learned from their field organizing efforts in New York into tangible action within Los Angeles.
Lessons for Los Angeles
The political landscapes of New York and Los Angeles present distinct challenges, particularly concerning their unique geographies and the distribution of political power. In Los Angeles, elections for city council members often carry more substantial weight and direct local impact compared to a mayoral race, which can sometimes be perceived as a more distant authority. This distinction is vital for strategizing local campaigns.
Leslie Chang, who coordinates the East San Gabriel Valley initiatives for the Democratic Socialists of America, also made the journey to New York during the primary elections to canvass for Mamdani. Her efforts included volunteering in Chinatown, where her language skills proved invaluable, and within the Red Hook public housing projects. “These were tough conversations,” Chang recalled, noting that residents often felt left ou…
Despite the inherent difficulties, these experiences provided invaluable insights into engaging diverse communities. Given that the DSA-LA chapter has already endorsed five candidates across upcoming city council and local school board elections, there will be ample opportunities for these newly energized volunteers to apply their acquired skills and enthusiasm in the coming year, striving to replicate Mamdani’s success on their home turf.
