Senator Murray Blasts ICE Over ‘Horrific’ Dog Attack
Washington D.C. – A prominent U.S. senator has publicly denounced the Trump administration following claims that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) K-9 unit inflicted severe trauma upon one of her constituents. Democratic Senator Patty Murray of Washington state stated that Wilmer Toledo-Martinez sustained “horrific” injuries during his detention by ICE agents in November.
Senator Murray’s Denunciation
Senator Murray described the circumstances surrounding Toledo-Martinez’s apprehension as deeply troubling. “An ICE agent lured Wilmer out of his home under false pretenses, posing as a construction worker who claimed to have hit Wilmer’s car and needed him to step outside to verify,” Murray revealed in a press statement. She continued, detailing the ambush: “Another agent, accompanied by a dog, was hiding nearby and released the dog on Wilmer shortly after he stepped outside.”
According to Senator Murray, Toledo-Martinez, who arrived in the United States at age 15 and is currently undocumented, was neither resisting arrest nor attempting to flee when the K-9 unit attacked. He is presently being held at the Northwest ICE processing center. The senator emphasized the profound impact of the incident, noting that Toledo-Martinez was apprehended in the presence of his wife and two young children, all of whom are U.S. citizens. Murray has since demanded his immediate release.
Deceptive Tactics and Brutal Assault
The aftermath of the dog attack left Toledo-Martinez in a critical state. “Following the attack, Wilmer was left shaking and dizzy, and at one point his vision went black, yet he was denied medical care for hours,” Murray asserted. Despite his severe condition, medical attention was delayed. He was eventually transported to a hospital, where he received stitches for his wounds. He was also prescribed antibiotics and additional medication; however, Murray stated that the antibiotics were not dispensed promptly, and the other prescribed medication was never provided at all.
Visual evidence provided by Senator Murray showcased deep lacerations on Toledo-Martinez’s side, underscoring the severity of the incident. “This should shock the conscience of every one of us,” Murray declared, expressing her outrage. She added, “I do not want to live in an America where federal agents can sic attack dogs on peaceful residents with impunity and face no consequences.”
Denied Care and Family Impact
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the federal agency responsible for overseeing ICE operations, did not offer an immediate response when contacted for comment regarding Senator Murray’s allegations.
Broader Concerns Over ICE Conduct
This incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of ICE’s operational tactics. Concurrently, police in Vancouver, Washington, confirmed they are investigating a separate event where an ICE agent is alleged to have run over a man’s foot during an arrest. This development was first reported by Oregon Live, adding to a growing list of concerns regarding agent conduct during detentions.
Senator Murray’s condemnation highlights a critical debate about the use of force by federal immigration agents and the treatment of detainees, especially those not actively resisting. Her call for accountability and the immediate release of Wilmer Toledo-Martinez resonates with advocates pushing for reform within immigration enforcement practices, urging a reevaluation of protocols to prevent such incidents from recurring.
