Trump Demands ‘Death Penalty’ for Democratic Lawmakers

Former President Donald Trump has ignited a firestorm of condemnation after suggesting that a group of Democratic lawmakers should face the “death penalty” for a video they posted. The controversial remarks, shared on his Truth Social platform, accused the legislators of “seditious behavior” after they released a message encouraging active service members to refuse illegal orders.

The video, which debuted on Tuesday, features six prominent Democratic figures, all of whom possess backgrounds in military service or intelligence. Among them are Senators Elissa Slotkin and Mark Kelly, alongside Representatives Maggie Goodlander, Chris Deluzio, Chrissy Houlahan, and Jason Crow. In the 90-second digital address, the lawmakers invoked their shared oath to the Constitution.

Lawmakers’ Video Urges Refusal of Illegal Orders

“Like us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this constitution,” the bipartisan group stated. “And right now, the threats to our constitution aren’t just coming from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse illegal orders, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that violate the law or our constitution.”

This message appears to have provoked a furious reaction from the former commander-in-chief. On Thursday morning, Trump launched a series of posts on Truth Social, escalating his rhetoric significantly.

Trump’s Fiery Truth Social Posts

In his initial post, Trump wrote: “It’s called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL.” He followed up with another statement, declaring: “This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP??? President DJT.”

The most incendiary comment came in a third post, where he explicitly stated: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!”. Adding to the gravity of his remarks, Trump also reposted content that read: “HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!” These comments quickly drew widespread criticism from across the political spectrum.

Democrats Condemn Trump’s Remarks

Following Trump’s pronouncements on Thursday, top House Democratic leaders swiftly issued a joint statement condemning the former president’s language. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic whip Katherine Clark, and Democratic caucus chair Pete Aguilar united to denounce the controversial remarks.

“Political violence has no place in America,” their statement asserted. They further emphasized the distinguished service of the implicated lawmakers: “Representatives Jason Crow, Chris DeLuzio, Maggie Goodlander and Chrissy Houlahan and Senators Mark Kelly and Elissa Slotkin all served our country with tremendous patriotism and distinction.” The leaders highlighted the dangerous precedent set by such rhetoric, particularly when aimed at individuals who have dedicated their lives to national service.

The controversy underscores the heightened political tensions in the nation, with calls for extreme punishment against political opponents raising alarms about democratic norms and the potential for real-world violence. The former president’s suggestion of the death penalty for his critics marks a significant escalation in his often inflammatory public discourse.
