Trump Honors Cultural Icons in Oval Office Ceremony
Washington D.C. – Former President Donald Trump welcomed the distinguished recipients of the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors to the historic Oval Office on Saturday evening for a special medal presentation. The ceremony celebrated an eclectic group of cultural luminaries: country music legend George Strait, acclaimed actor and singer Michael Crawford, Hollywood icon Sylvester “Sly” Stallone, and the enduring members of the rock band Kiss.
Addressing the honorees, Trump underscored the significance of the occasion. “This is a great evening, it’s a great honor,” he stated. “And I’m delighted to welcome to the Oval Office – the world-famous, most famous office in the world, most powerful office in the world – our truly exceptional 2025 Kennedy Center honorees.” He further lauded the group, asserting that they “inspired, uplifted and unified millions and millions of Americans,” and proclaiming them “the most accomplished and renowned class of Kennedy Center honorees ever assembled.”
Leadership and Design Updates
Standing alongside the former president during the presentation was Richard Grenell, the current president of the Kennedy Center. Grenell, appointed by Trump in February of this year to lead the institution, also serves as a special envoy to Latin America for the administration. The medallions bestowed upon the honorees featured a fresh design, a detail Trump highlighted. He noted that Tiffany and Co. had “re-designed” the awards, praising their work: “They have done a fantastic job, they’re wonderful people – I know them very well because they’re right next to Trump Tower, I’ve lived with them many years.”
A Renewed Focus on the Arts
Notably, Trump’s engagement with the Kennedy Center marks a significant shift from his first term, during which he did not visit the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts nor participate in its annual awards program. His current interest, however, is pronounced. Since leaving office, he has taken steps to reshape the center’s governance, replacing its board of trustees with his supporters. He has also articulated ambitious plans for the institution, pledging to “fully renovate” its infrastructure and elevate it to a “crown jewel” of American arts and culture.
The selection process for this year’s honorees had remained somewhat ambiguous, though Trump revealed in August, when the list was first announced, that he had been “about 98% involved” in the choices. The traditional Kennedy Center Honors program, which includes a series of tribute performances dedicated to each recipient, is scheduled to be taped on Sunday. The special broadcast is slated to air to a national audience later in December. Trump had previously announced in August his intention to host the upcoming televised show.
