Trump Attacks Somali Immigrants Amid Minnesota Enforcement
Former President Donald Trump unleashed a vitriolic attack on Somali immigrants on Tuesday, labeling them “garbage” and asserting they should be deported to their home country. This inflammatory rhetoric emerged as reports indicate the U.S. government is ramping up immigration enforcement efforts against undocumented Somalis residing in Minnesota.
During a cabinet meeting, Trump launched into a xenophobic diatribe, directing his ire at Somalis and specifically targeting Representative Ilhan Omar, a naturalized U.S. citizen and congresswoman of Somali origin. He characterized Somalia as a nation that “stinks” and is “no good for a reason.”
“They contribute nothing,” Trump declared. “I don’t want them in our country, I’ll be honest with you.” He further disparaged Representative Omar as “garbage,” warning, “we’re going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country.”
He continued his broad condemnation, stating, “These are people who do nothing but complain. They complain, and from where they came from, they got nothing… When they come from hell and they complain and do nothing but bitch, we don’t want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it.”
## Heightened Enforcement in Minnesota
Simultaneously with Trump’s comments, The New York Times reported on Tuesday that the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, home to a significant Somali population, is slated for increased deportation operations this week. These efforts are reportedly focusing on Somali individuals who have received final deportation orders.
The report detailed plans for “strike teams” comprising agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies. Approximately 100 agents from across the nation are expected to be deployed to the region for these intensified operations. Other news organizations, including The Associated Press, have corroborated these reports.
### Fraud Allegations and Previous Threats
The timing of these actions follows a period where conservative media and political figures have highlighted several fraud cases spanning multiple years. These cases involve dozens of Somali residents whom prosecutors accuse of making false claims to the state to obtain reimbursements for various services, including meal disbursements, medical care, housing assistance, and autism treatment.
The Trump administration had previously issued threats to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalis in Minnesota, citing the state as a “hub of fraudulent money laundering activity.” Adding to the pressure, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Monday that his department would be investigating whether taxpayer funds from Minnesotans had “been diverted…”
The confluence of the former president’s harsh language and the reported surge in federal enforcement underscores a significant escalation in the targeting of the Somali community in Minnesota. These developments raise concerns among immigrant advocates and community leaders about the potential impact on thousands of individuals and families.
